Weekly Social Group: for Teens & Young Adults
The purpose of the weekly social group is to offer the opportunity for teens and young adults with autism to get together and have a good time in a safe and supportive environment. This social group is intended to provide fun activities within a social context, where participants are encouraged to get to know each other and build peer relationships.
Each session of the program consists of 60 minute lessons, once per week, for a multiple weeks. Sessions for this program takes place three times during the year; fall (mid-October to late November), winter (late January to early March), and spring (mid-April to late May). The activities will vary each week, including indoor and outdoor activities, depending on the weather. Up to 10 participants will be enrolled in each session, and supported by a program leader, support workers, and volunteers.
Past sessions have included: Coffee nights, Wii party, dance party, crafts, dinner, games nights, art projects, bowling, and more!
At Canucks Autism Network, we strive to meet the needs of each participant through parent and participant collaboration. Our staff receive training on a variety of support strategies for individuals with autism. Please do not hesitate to speak with our staff about strategies that should be implemented (e.g., visual schedules, first-then boards, token systems, social stories, etc.) and contact the Program Coordinator, firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions or concerns.
