Sue Formosa

Sue has worked with children who have autism since 1973. She obtained her BA in clinical and developmental psychology from UBC in 1976 and her MSc in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Alabama in 1979. She has held membership in BCASLPA and CASLPA since 1979. From 1979 to 2002 she was the registered speech-language pathologist at Blenheim House, which became the Alan Cashmore Centre in 1995. She has had a private practice from 1981 to the present time, specializing in work with people who have autism and people who have Down Syndrome. Sue was the director of the Alan Cashmore Centre from 1987 to 2002. She was also the provincial coordinator for the TLC3 project - a 5 yr national project from 1997-2002 funded by the Lawson Foundation which promoted program development and delivery for families whose children were at risk for communication disorders. Her interests are: promotion of inclusion for people who have autism, support for families of people who have autism, collaboration with other community organizations in developing programs not currently available for families, and education about the teaching of contextualized skills which can promote a good quality of life in the adult years for individuals with autism. |
Katy Harandi, Chair

Katy is the mother of a Grade 9 girl with autism. She has devoted her time since 1995 toward helping her daughter overcome many of the challenges of this condition. She has investigated educational and biomedical treatments for autism and has researched this field extensively. Katy supervised and actively participated in her daughter's home-based ABA program, receiving many hours of training from educational and behavioral specialists, as well as experts in the fields of speech and occupational therapy. She is a founding member of Phoenix Academy of Learning (a private school for children with autism), and the Chair of the Board and President of the Society. Katy is President of isolve IT Inc., a computer support company. She received her B.A. degree from Stanford University in Computer Science and holds an MBA from UBC. |
Glenn Laufer, Treasurer

Glenn is the father of a Grade 7 boy who has Asperger Syndrome. He is a Chartered Accountant working for Corix Infrastructure Inc., a BC based water infrastructure company. He and his wife deal with the day to day issues that result from their son's autism. Prior to working in industry Glenn worked in public practice auditing a number of not for profit organizations. |
Simon Myara

Simon is the father of a Grade 9 girl with autism. He is a strong advocate for all children with differing abilities. He runs a very successful real estate business. He and his wife deal daily with the challenges faced by parents of an extremely anxious teenage girl with autism. |
Robert D. Standerwick

Mr. Standerwick was born and raised in Vancouver where he attended high school. He graduated from UBC with a BA and an LLB. Bob has been a lawyer in Vancouver for almost 30 years and is currently a partner with the national firm of Lang Michener LLP. He has been active in a number of community organizations. Currently, he’s a member of the Board of West Point Grey Academy (since 1999) and its Chair (since 2000). He is also a member of the Board of Phoenix Academy of Learning Society (since 2007). |
Julia Ward

In 2002 Julia started her private practice, Practical Solutions, Occupational Therapy. Since then she has developed a strong interest in supporting children with autism and their families bringing her knowledge of sensory integration, gross and fine motor development to the child’s team regardless of the type of intervention the family has chosen. Julie trained as an occupational therapist in Liverpool, England and graduated in 1981. In 1987 she moved to Vancouver with her husband. She has worked in pediatrics in UK Australia, USA and Canada. Julia lives in North Vancouver with her husband and two teenage sons. |
Marie Westby

Marie has a 9-year old son with autism and is a strong advocate for children with differing abilities. She received a BSc in Physical Therapy from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 1988. She is currently a PhD candidate in Rehabilitation Sciences at UBC and holds a strategic training fellowship with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in quality of life research in rehabilitation. Her thesis work is examining rehabilitation and exercise interventions following total hip and knee replacement surgery to establish best practice recommendations and help people return to active lifestyles. She is the co-developer of Joint Works and Water Works recreational exercise programs for people with arthritis - currently offered in more than 35 communities across BC. She has a strong background in volunteering with children with disabilities and amateur sports in BC. |
