Sports and Rec Training

At Canucks Autism Network, we believe that positive change is achieved through shared knowledge, partnership and collective capacity.

Canucks Autism Network is proud to be a national leader in providing autism training to the sports and recreation community. We have partnered with such organizations as the Coaching Association of Canada, viaSport, BC Recreation and Parks Association and Sport for Life to both deliver workshops and develop resources. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that anyone who comes into contact with an individual with autism is equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, and strategies to best support them and communicate with them.

Training workshops for the sports and recreation community introduce coaches and community sport leaders to a range of strategies for supporting individuals with autism in inclusive sport activities. Our workshops are eligible for Coaching Association of Canada NCCP Maintenance of Certification Points (PD Points) and BC Recreation and Parks Association Continuing Education Credits (CECs).

Workshop Topics May Include:

  • Autism 101: Challenges faced by individuals with autism in sports and recreation settings
  • Communication Tips
  • Teaching/Coaching Tools
  • Motivation and Behaviour Support Strategies
  • Tips for Successful Inclusion

Training & Try-It Workshops:

In addition to providing training to your sports and recreation group, Canucks Autism Network can also facilitate a “Try-It” component to your workshop. A “Try-It” event allows your organization or group to:

  • Host an event introducing your sport or activity to individuals with autism.
  • Give your staff a valuable, hands-on opportunity to directly apply the tips and strategies that they learned.
  • Attract new participants to your organization!

These “Try-It” events typically occur immediately after your group’s training session. We can invite participants with autism to try your sport/activity while also providing Canucks Autism Network staff to guide your staff’s interactions with the participants.

In 2017, Canucks Autism Network was proud to provide Training & Try-It Days for Soccer BC, Tennis BC, Curl BC, Golf BC and Canoe/Kayak BC.
